Manufacturer Part #

SnapperGPS-v2.2.0

Product Description

The SnapperGPS receiver, developed in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, is a small, low-cost, low-power GNSS receiver for non-real-time wildlife tracking. It employs the snapshot GNSS technology, which offloads the computationally expensive data processing to the cloud. Beyond that, the SnapperGPS is special in that it:

  • Can operate for more than 12 consecutive months
  • Needs only 12ms of signal reception for a fix
  • Employs multiple satellite systems for improved reliability (GPS, Galileo, and BeiDou)
  • Achieves a median real-world tracking accuracy of about 15m (before smoothing)
  • Maintains a real-time clock to accurately timestamp the fixes
  • Measures temperature
  • Is configured via USB in your browser without the need to install a driver or app
  • Is certified open-source hardware

How to use the SnapperGPS:

  1. Get your SnapperGPS receiver.
  2. Configure your SnapperGPS receiver in your browser for your deployment.
  3. Deploy your SnapperGPS receiver.
  4. The SnapperGPS receiver captures GNSS snapshots according to your configuration.
  5. Recover your SnapperGPS receiver.
  6. Upload the data from your SnapperGPS receiver to the server.
  7. Download the track of your surveilled animal.

Batteries

This version of the SnapperGPS uses a pair of LR48 or SR48 button cell batteries, sold separately. These are a common button cell alkaline battery and should easy to find locally or online.

Enclosures

On the SnapperGPS-Housings Github are some creative ideas about DIY enclosures, so that your receiver will perform in whichever environment you choose to deploy it. These options include 3D printed cases, heat-shrink tubing, vacuum packing, and a specially designed commercial box.

Some of these designs were intended to fit the older versions of the SnapperGPS, so modifications may need to be made to fit the V2.2.0. Please see the changes from previous versions.
