RDv5

Product Description

New Raspberry Pi 5 has launched. It needs 5V 5A power input via USB-C port. Most adapters do not have this 5V 5A output, though they have capability to give out more than 25W of power. USB PD adapters have higher voltage and thereby give out >27W of power.

USB PD adapters are widely used and easily available with most users. This product board, takes in USB-PD adapters, 6V-20V batteries or any normal DC adapter, which can give out >27W of power at 6V or higher voltage and converts it to 5V 5A power required by RaspberryPi 5.

The product can take in voltages in the range 6-20V and convert them into 5V output via USB-C port.

The board also has built-in USB-PD communication to communicate with USB-PD compatible adapters to generate enough power for RaspberryPi 5.

  • Compatible with all 5V boards which needs upto 5A, including recently launched RaspberryPi 5
  • USB-C input port and soldering pad for DC inputs
  • USB-C output port and soldering pad to take out output voltage for other uses
  • USB-PD compatible (Up to 20V) with built-in USB-PD negotiation communication IC
    • Will work with all USB-PD adapters. But to get 5V 5A output power, it is needed to use an adapter of >27W for sufficient power availability
    • USB PD negotiation happens up to 20V maximum. User can use any USB PD adapter (9V onwards)
    • Compatible up to USB PD 3.0
  • Compatible with DC adapters.
    • Soldering pads are placed on board to solder DC voltage sources from 6-20V.
    • For 5V 5A, use DC sources which can give out 27W or more power.
  • Compatible with 6V-20V (2S to 4S Li-ion or Li-Po) battery packs
    • Battery packs can be directly soldered on to the input pad.
    • Minimum voltage: 6V
    • Maximum full charge voltage of battery pack: 20V
  • Output ON LED indicator
  • Minimum turn on voltage of 6V

Notes:

  1. The board will heat up slightly for higher currents (above 3A). If the ambient temperature is high, it is recommended to use a heat sink or a small fan for highest current requirement. The heating will be noticeable beyond 4A of output current.
  2. When the voltage is lower, the input current requirement for the same output power will be high. Use a higher voltage adapter for lower current draw at input.
  3. The switching currents on the board will be very high during high current outputs. It is recommended to keep it away from any conducting elements or fluids as the switching current is high.
  4. Turn on the input power only when all required connections at the output are made. Avoid handling the board when the input power is available.
